About Us

My name is Elly Vortex.  I live in the best state in the nation: Minnesota.  I set up this blog to chronicle my quest to hike every path, visit every park, bike every trail, paddle every river, look at every waterfall, climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow until I find my dream.

My dog is Thunderdog.  She's part German Shepherd, part goat, and part chicken.

My main human hiking partner is boyfriend --> fiancee --> husband Joe, who is somewhat skeptical of all this Outdoors Stuff.  Luckily, he is a good sport and usually game for trying something new.  He has a real yen for finding and looking at waterfalls.

Joe and I got hitched in the fall of 2014, and  I left the North Shore and we've set up our new Base Camp in the Twin Cities.  Never fear, the adventures will continue!  There's a lot of Minnesota (and the rest of the world) to see.

  1. Greetings. I've enjoyed reading your state park reviews. I too am doing the Hiking Clubs and am only 6 away from completing the entire program. I have a question about the Hiking Club at Savanna Portage. Without divuling the password, I was wondering if you remember roughly where the password is located? Is it near the overlook at the intersections of the continental divide and old schoolhouse trails? Or is it located closer to the bog board walk? You mention in your article that the bog walk is AFTER the password. I am just trying to get a feel for the layout of the land.

    Kind regards.

    1. Hi, Bart!
Joe and I don't have the answer off the tops of our heads - BUT - we have a lot of pictures from that day. We'll look back through the pictures to see where in the hike we saw the sign. We'll get back to you soon -

  3. Hello!
I have started to complete some hiking club trails, and found your blog! I love the pictures/stories! I've have had a setback completing my trails, and was wondering if you know of any hiking club trails that are stroller/wagon/wheelchair accessible?

  4. You have a beautiful website! My family is working on the hiking club trails and we earned our 25 mile badge last fall. We got interested in the hiking club after hiking around the North Shore and it seemed like a great way to keep track of our experiences. It's fun to visit new places and learn about all that Minnesota has to offer.
